University Park officials announced Monday that the McFarlin Boulevard bridge south of Williams Park will reopen to traffic Friday after being closed for 15 months. The city will host a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. to mark the occasion
The new bridge is part of a two-phase project designed to improve traffic flow and flood control. A collapsible dam was built 300 feet south of bridge that planners believe will better control floods in Williams Pond and Turtle Creek. When water levels rise to a predetermined level, the dam will lower, preventing water from going over the road.
While major construction has ended, crews will crews to work on landscaping around the bridge and on a new island in Williams Park. That work is scheduled to be completed by the end of November.
