At 101 years old, Herbert M. “Herb” Sheaner Jr. still carries the youthful spirit of resilience and strength that has defined his lifetime of service.
On Nov. 11, the World War II U.S. Army veteran received the President’s Salute Award at the Founding Forward Dallas Area Chapter’s Accolades Awards Dinner.
Sheaner served in the U.S. Army’s 106th Infantry Division, Company G of the 422nd Regiment, from 1943 to 1945. During the Battle of the Bulge, he was captured by the German Army and held prisoner in eastern Germany before escaping in April 1945. His valor in combat earned him both the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
Upon his return home, Sheaner continued to lead and serve others in his community. He earned his BBA at the University of Texas and his MBA at the University of Michigan before founding his own insurance agency in East Dallas.
For 20 years, he helped strengthen the discipline of the next generation by coaching both cross country and track and field at Dallas’ Jesuit College Preparatory School.
His memoir Prisoner’s Odyssey chronicles his experience as a soldier and prisoner of war, giving readers a glimpse into the trials and triumphs he faced during his deployment.
