Henry S. Miller III, who oversaw his family’s more than century-old real estate firm and is known for his work developing the West Village shopping center as well as his stewardship of Highland Park Village and the Preston Royal Village shopping center, died on Feb. 28 at 79.

Miller worked in the commercial real estate firm Henry S. Miller, which was started by his grandfather in 1914. Henry attended SMU and later the Advanced Management Development Program at Harvard Graduate School of Design.

His family bought Highland Park Village in 1976 and he became managing director in 1986 of Highland Park Village and Preston Royal Village, which his family developed alongside Trammell Crow in 1958. During Miller’s tenure, he helped lead a revitalization of Highland Park Village, introducing high-end brands while maintaining the grocery store and movie theater. The family sold the Highland Park Village property to developer Ray Washburne in 2009.

“They transformed it…into an international shopping destination,” Washburne said. “(Henry) was a very visionary guy.”

Arguably, Miller may be best known for the 400,000-square foot West Village development in Uptown, which opened in 2001.

Miller also led Henry S. Miller Partners / Urban Partners, Henry S. Miller Interests, Inc. and other projects.

“My beloved Uncle Henry was a pioneering real estate developer who revolutionized DFW’s urban infill mixed use market with West Village,” said Henry S. Miller Companies CEO Greg Miller in a statement.

Aside from his work with his family’s real estate empire, Miller served on the boards of the Child and Family Guidance Foundation, NEXUS Recovery Center, SPCA, The Family Place, and the Center for Performing Arts, among others.

Miller is survived by his children, Kathryn Miller Rabey and her children Nicholas, Maximilian, and Olivia; Henry S. Miller IV and his wife Lydia, and their children Henry, Jack, Owen, and Mimi; Michael Alexander Miller and his wife Lindsey, and their children Layton Garrett, Miles, and Samuel; and Alexander Lewis Miller, as well as his sisters, Patsy Miller Donosky and Jacqueline Miller Stewart and a large extended family. He was preceded in death by his brother, Vance C. Miller.
