The City of University Park welcomed new faces to the city council and said goodbye to former Mayor Tommy Stewart and council members Mark Aldredge and Bob Myers.

At the May 5 meeting, Stewart reflected on his term as mayor, which started in 2020, and projects he was involved in — from the response to the COVID-19 pandemic to work in Snider Plaza and the Miracle Mile and helping to plan the city’s Centennial Celebration in 2024.

“There’s a lot (in the) six years that I put in here, and I’m proud to do it, and I really appreciate the opportunity to serve,” Stewart said.

Aldredge praised Stewart’s leadership.

“It’s been my privilege to serve on this city council for the last six years under Mayor Tommy Stewart,” Aldredge said. “We came in together six years ago and Tommy has been a mentor and a friend throughout our service together.”

Myers said he was particularly proud of his involvement with the Lovers Lane and Snider Plaza projects.

“I’m really, really proud of being affiliated with the Lovers Lane improvement, and Snider Plaza as well,” Myers said. “I’m really, really proud of the team that we had on the public improvement district recently.”

Following the swearing in of Biddle, new city council members Alex Bell and Darrell Lane, and returning council members Phillip Philbin and Melissa Rieman, Stewart, Aldredge, and Myers were presented with honorary street signs.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the city council selected Philbin as Mayor Pro Tem.
