The Dallas Police Department shared the following reminders about the rules governing e-bikes and golf carts in a written statement:

E-bikes:

  • A driver’s license is not required to operate an e-bike.
  • Riders must obey all traffic laws and yield to pedestrians.
  • Front and rear lights are required when riding after dark.
  • E-bikes are allowed on public streets, trails, and designated on-street bike lanes.
  • Riders may not carry more passengers than the bike is designed for.
  • At least one hand must remain on the handlebars while riding.
  • E-moto bikes, including off-road-style electric motorcycles, are not permitted.

Golf carts:

Golf carts may be driven on certain public roadways, provided they meet the following requirements:

  • The roadway must have a posted speed limit of 35 mph or less.
  • The operator must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Golf carts are not permitted on trails.
  • They must be equipped with required safety features, including headlamps, tail lamps, turn signals, reflectors, mirrors, and a parking brake.
  • Golf carts with a top speed of 25 mph or less must display a slow-moving vehicle emblem.

The department said one of the most frequent complaints from residents involves children operating e-bikes and golf carts recklessly in neighborhoods, on sidewalks, or while distracted.

Parents are encouraged to talk with their children about traffic safety and make sure they understand how to operate these vehicles responsibly and respectfully. Safe operation helps protect riders, pedestrians and motorists while keeping neighborhoods safer for everyone.

Residents who observe a prohibited vehicle or another safety concern may contact 311, available 24 hours a day, or the Dallas Park Rangers at 214-671-7000 or [email protected]. Park Rangers are available daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
