The University Park City Council voted on July 21 to restrict parking on a portion of the 4200 block of Amherst Avenue to residents only from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
The new restriction applies to the south side of the 4200 block of Amherst from 4215 west to Douglas Avenue and the north side from 4212 west to Douglas Avenue. Violators are subject to a fine of up to $200.
University Park considered the restriction at the request of a resident. All respondents to a poll of the west side of the 4200 block of Amherst favored parking limitations, explained director of public works and community development Keegan Littrell.
He added that residents believe the increase in parked cars comes from Miracle Mile employees.
The 4200 block of Amherst Avenue is not the first area north of the Miracle Mile designated as resident only. The city temporarily limited parking on the 4300 and 4400 blocks of Amherst to residents in April 2024 to ease congestion during alley construction, then made the restriction permanent in October of that year.
Two residents of the 4200 block of Amherst spoke in favor of resident-only parking, explaining that some drivers speed down their street, creating the potential for an accident. Resident Greg Crespi said that cars have been clipped and a cat has been run over.
“It’s pretty solid cars, and there’s enough room left for one kind of narrow lane of traffic through, but not two lanes,” he explained. “In the opinion of a lot of us, this crowded parking in this narrow street is creating a public safety concern.”
Also during the meeting, the City Council discussed stormwater improvements in portions of the Turtle Creek Basin.
