Lock your doors and hold onto your key fobs, GMC owners. GMCs are the most frequently reported stolen vehicles across Dallas and the Park Cities.
In Highland Park, 11 GMC vehicles were stolen between 2024 and 2026, followed by Chevrolet with seven reported stolen during the same time period, Highland Park Department of Public Safety Lt. Lance Koppa said.
In University Park, GMC accounted for 30%, or 15, of the 50 vehicles stolen in 2025, followed by Land Rover at 14%, or seven. In 2024, GMC accounted for 24%, or five, of the 21 vehicles stolen, followed by Cadillac and Dodge at 19.04%, or four, explained University Park spokesperson Paige Ruedy.
In Dallas, GMC and Chevrolet trucks were followed by Ford trucks (particularly Raptors and F-150, F-250, and F-350 series), according to Officer Jonathan Maner with the Dallas Police Department.
Regardless of where you live or what you drive, officials stress the importance of locking vehicles, ensuring key fobs and valuables aren’t left inside, and parking in a locked garage when possible to prevent theft.
“These small steps can make a significant difference in preventing vehicle theft and keeping our community safe,” Ruedy said.
Koppa added that hearing your car alarm outside “should be a call to dispatch right away.”
The data is mixed on whether vehicle thefts are increasing or falling.
Maner said the department has seen a 26.8% drop in vehicle thefts so far this year, following a 23.41% reduction in 2025.
“While overall numbers are down, the methods and targets of auto thieves have remained largely consistent,” he added. “We continue to see offenders using advanced tools such as key programmers to steal high-end vehicles.”
The Highland Park Department of Public Safety reported 32 motor vehicle thefts from June 2024 to June 2025, and 22 from June 2025 to June 2026, Koppa said.
The University Park Police Department has seen 34 motor vehicle thefts reported in 2026 as of July 30, after reporting 50 in 2025 and 21 in 2024, according to Ruedy.
