Two teachers from Hillcrest High School started off the new year with acclaim. English and economics teacher Amanda Ashmead has been named a 2011 Outstanding Teacher by Texas Exes, the alumni association of University of Texas at Austin. The award is given annually to teachers from 10 Texas public high schools and two elementary schools and includes a $2,250 cash prize, all-expenses paid access to the Conference on Texas Excellence in Education in February, and a bronze sculpture. Math teacher Michelle Ellenburg was one of eight high school teachers to receive a 2011 Rapoport Rising Star Award and will also attend the conference.
