The Highland Park board of trustees recognized students for their outstanding artistic and athletic achievements during its Nov. 18 meeting.
The board honored sophomore Kate Bodwell as the winner of this year’s Financial Audit Art Cover Competition. Students from across the district were encouraged to illustrate what HPISD means to them during the annual contest. Bodwell’s design, titled “Camera Roll,” will be featured on the district’s published financial audit.
The board also recognized members of the high school’s cross country teams for their excellent seasons.
The girls cross country team won its 47th district championship for HPISD, was Region 2-5A runner up, and finished fifth at the state meet. More than 250 Texas schools compete in cross country, head coach Susan Bailey said.
“They continued the tradition of excellence,” she said of her team. “Our slogan for the year that was set out by the captains was ‘Run Your Heart Out,’ and they definitely did that.”
The boys cross country team was represented at the state championship by Spencer Haag, a National Merit Semifinalist who will attend the University of Chicago.
“I can’t say enough about him and what he’s done for us the last four years,” head coach David Ripley said. “He’s just been a tremendous athlete for us.”
