As I was scanning the match-ups for all of the bowl games, and not seeing SMU as I got closer and closer to the BCS bowls, I wondered if the Mustangs somehow got left out of the mix. No, they ended up in one of those minor bowls that has no business being scheduled after New Year’s Day: the BBVA Compass Bowl, which will be played Jan. 7 in Birmingham, Ala. The Mustangs will take on the Pitt Panthers.

Armed Forces: BYU vs. Tulsa, noon on Dec. 30, SMU’s Ford Stadium
Ticket City: Houston vs. Penn State, noon on Jan. 2, Cotton Bowl
Cotton: Arkansas vs. Kansas State, 8 p.m. on Jan. 6, Cowboys Stadium
