Wyatt is a go-to scorer and playmaker for the Scots during his senior season
A year ago, Highland Park guard Canon Wyatt was known primarily for his pinpoint perimeter accuracy on the basketball court.
These days, he’s still capable of draining the deep ball, but the senior’s game is about much more. Wyatt has emerged not only as the top scorer this season for the Scots, but has embraced his leadership role, too.
“I knew I was going to have to step up this season,” Wyatt said. “I’ve been asked to do a lot more and be a more complete offensive player. I’ve been trusting the work I put in, and it’s allowed me to play well.”
Wyatt’s scoring has provided stability for a young HP roster that had two starters from a year ago transfer during the offseason. Then the Scots lost Anderson Hoctor to an injury early this year.
That leaves Wyatt and forward Will Saunders as the only players with significant varsity experience as HP prepares for District 12-5A play, with the hope of contending for a league title.

Wyatt played rotational minutes for the Scots two years ago but had a breakthrough as a junior. He recalls starting an early-season game on the road against perennial powerhouse Allen and hitting his first shot to calm the nerves.
“That game really helped my confidence and allowed me to have a great season,” said Wyatt, who is verbally committed to play in college next season at Cal Poly. “They had a great environment. I came in and hit my first three. My confidence went up in that moment.”
He was more of a spot-up shooter and secondary ball-handler then, but given the roster turnover this season, Wyatt has become more of a critical playmaker. It helps that his 6-foot frame has gotten stronger, too.
“He’s got deep range, but he can do other things besides scoring. He’s playing much better defense and passing the ball. He’s a more well-rounded player,” said HP head coach David Piehler. “His size doesn’t limit him. He’s not afraid to drive into the paint and draw contact.”
Despite seeing increased defensive attention during his senior campaign, the guy in uniform No. 1 is often the No. 1 option when HP needs a big shot.
“He’s not a surprise anymore. Teams are guarding him much tighter.” Piehler said. “When he shoots it, I’m surprised if it doesn’t go in.”
