Not even a tough test at The Tribute Golf Club could slow down Highland Park’s boys golf team.
The Scots A and B squads combined to sweep the District 12-5A championships Tuesday and Wednesday in The Colony with sophomore Ben Parks achieving top individual accolades by claiming gold.
HP’s A team fired a 282 as a group on Tuesday before closing with a 276 Wednesday for a combined total of 558 to outpace HP’s B team (285-279–564) and Frisco Wakeland A (292-277–569).
By virtue of finishing first and second, respectively, HP’s A and B teams both qualified for the 5A Region 2 Championships April 14-15 at Tanglewood Golf Club in Pottsboro.
For HP’s A team, it was the third consecutive district title.
“I was very pleased with the results,” said Richard Wager, HP head coach. “The kids did a great job, especially considering I hadn’t seen them in about 10 days because of Spring Break. But I trusted they would take care of business and be ready and they were.”
Individually, Parks earned first-place honors (68-69–137) after defeating Wakeland’s Luke Colton (71-66–137) on the first hole of a playoff. HP’s Carter Klein (66-72–138) and Wakeland’s Maxton Brown (72-66–138), meanwhile, finished in a tie for third.
“(Colton) is an outstanding player and a top-10 player in the state,” Wager said. “Ben just played incredible. And to pull it out on the first playoff hole … wow.”
Rounding out the competitors for HP’s A team were Jeffrey Reubenstein (75-64–139) in fifth, Charlie Conger (70-70–140) in sixth, Andrew Lieu (71-70–141) in eighth, and Owen Beck in 20th (75-76–151).
Joining Parks on the B team were Edward Lehner in eighth (72-69–141), Charlie Simmons in 10th (73-69–142), Gray Gale in 13th (72-72–144), and William Ballotta in 20th (75-76–151).
“There wasn’t a ton of wind out there, so the course kind of had its guard down and we were able to take advantage,” Wager said. “We had a few personal-bests posted and there were a lot of red numbers overall.”
Wager noted Reubenstein was a pleasant surprise carding a career-low 64 on Day 2, while Hayes Durham (73-69–142) shot a career-low on his second round to finish as a medalist in 10th.
“There were a lot of red numbers out there and a lot of good golf being played,” Wager said. “And we needed it because Wakeland is a great team.”
