The billionaire owner of the site of the demolished Cox mansion has withdrawn his application to amend Highland Park’s zoning ordinance to permit the construction of a new home that would exceed the property’s maximum allowed height, the town announced in a Jan. 30 email.
“This decision reflects the applicant’s understanding of and commitment to addressing community concerns and ensuring solutions that avoid setting challenging precedents for the Town,” the email stated.
A public hearing on the amendment that was scheduled for Feb. 4 has been cancelled.
If approved by the Town Council, the amendment would have permitted the home at 4101 Beverly Dr. to include a cupola, or dome-shaped structure, extending its height to just under 65 feet, 10 feet higher than is currently permitted in the home’s zoning district.
The Highland Park Zoning Commission voted 3-2 in favor of recommending approval of an amendment on Jan. 23 after more than an hour of discussion.
