Dallas Animal Services (DAS) is limiting the number of dogs accepted at the shelter due to identified cases of canine distemper virus.

To ensure the safety of the dogs in the community and shelter, DAS will immediately begin limiting the intake of dogs to those that are critically sick or injured or who are a danger to themselves or others.

Shelter dogs that have been exposed are currently being quarantined, and testing is taking place to understand the impact and provide the proper cleaning and medical protocols.

DAS encourages struggling pet owners considering owner surrender to visit their webpage to access resource information for Owner Surrender Resources, which helps residents attempt to avoid the shelter for surrender.

DAS asks that residents who find a friendly lost dog and are willing to help, temporarily care for the animal to reduce the spread of illness among new shelter intakes. If unable to do so, they are asking residents to call 311 or file a report online Dallas 311 Home.
