As the start of the District 12-5A volleyball schedule approaches, Highland Park appears poised to contend for another crown.

The Lady Scots placed third in an elite 68-team field at the Volleypalooza tournament over the weekend in Round Rock. HP was the highest finisher among all Texas programs at the event, which was won by California powerhouse Torrey Pines.

HP won eight of its nine matches over three days, with the only defeat coming against Torrey Pines in the semifinals. All matches were abbreviated to two out of three sets, as in most early-season tournaments.

The Lady Scots (22-7) bounced back with a win over Plano East in the third-place match. Earlier, they swept defending Class 6A Division I state champion Conroe Grand Oaks for the second straight weekend, after achieving the same result in the semifinals of the Northwest ISD tournament on Aug. 23.

Other victories for HP came against Greenwich (Connecticut) Country Day, McAllen, San Antonio Harlan, Leander Rouse, Duncanville, and San Antonio O’Connor. Brooklyn Bailey, Sarah Floyd, and Gigi Whann represented HP on the all-tournament team.

HP returned home for a three-set sweep of Lake Highlands on Tuesday, 25-17, 25-18, 25-19, and will wrap up nondistrict play on Friday by hosting Aledo.

After that, the Lady Scots will start the 12-5A slate on Sept. 9 at Carrollton Creekview. They shared the league title last season with eventual 5A Division II state champion Frisco Wakeland.
