SKULDUGGERY OF THE WEEK: OPEN SESAME
How did an auto thief steal a locked 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUV in the 4300 block of Southern Avenue before 2:38 p.m. on Dec. 23 without breaking into the vehicle? The key fob was left inside, so they would have just needed to try to open the door.

Reported at 11:54 a.m.: A porch pirate stole packages from a home on Purdue Street.
Reported at 12:25 p.m.: A burglar struck an unlocked vehicle on Amherst Avenue.
Officers took a report of forgery/credit card abuse that occurred in November on Westminster Avenue at about 4:01 p.m.
Reported at 5:33 p.m.: A burglar broke into and damaged a locked 2026 GMC Sierra on Stanford Avenue.
Reported at 9:18 p.m.: A burglar entered a locked 2017 Cadillac Escalade on Windsor Parkway.

Reported at 3:27 p.m. on Preston Road: A theft of at least $100 worth of property that occurred on Nov. 21.

Officers investigated a suspicious call on Mockingbird Lane at about 5:31 p.m.
Police investigated a burglary in progress at about 10:33 p.m. on Hillcrest Avenue and arrested a 40-year-old man for evading arrest, burglary of a building, failing to identify himself, and on a warrant.

Reported at 6:05 a.m.: A petrol station plunderer burglarized a Shell gas station on Lovers Lane.

Reported at 9:37 a.m.: A reckless roadster damaged the front fender of a 2025 Lexus RX 350 in the 4600 block of Fairfax Avenue on Dec. 21 while the car’s driver spent a few minutes delivering a package
Reported at 9:49 a.m.: A poor parker may have damaged a Tesla Model S while the car’s owner was having breakfast at Sadelle’s in Highland Park Village.
Reported at 10:37 a.m.: A contractor who had been paid $961,000 for materials to renovate a home in the 3400 block of Mockingbird Lane hadn’t contacted the home’s owner since February or performed any work.
A forger altered a check that a woman wrote to the Town of Highland Park for $207.11 and placed in her mailbox in the 5300 block of Byron Avenue and attempted to deposit a fake check for $4,956 to “Travis Miller” before 7:30 p.m.

Reported at 10:18 p.m.: After hearing a crash-like sound, a family walked outside to find damage to their 2013 Lexus RX 350 in the 4500 block of Rheims Place, but no sign of the vehicle that had caused the crash.

A troublemaker threw leaves and a rock at a glass garage door in the 4300 block of Lomo Alto Drive at about 2:48 a.m., breaking one of the door’s window panes.
A 24-year-old man was arrested for driving while intoxicated at about 4:50 a.m. in the 5400 block of Preston Road.

A 26-year-old was arrested at about 1:47 a.m. on a warrant near the intersection of Abbott Avenue and Armstrong Parkway.
A 32-year-old man was arrested on a warrant at about 9:59 a.m. in the 4200 block of Armstrong Parkway.
Reported at 9:02 p.m.: A burglar stole a Louis Vuitton handbag containing two cell phones, a wedding band, a credit card, a passport, and $100 from a Audi Q8 in the 4500 block of Westway Avenue while the car’s owners were away from their vehicle for about 20 minutes.

A reckless roadster hit a 2021 Jeep Wrangler parked in the 5000 block of Airline Road before 9:50 p.m., but drove off without leaving information.
