Highland Park ISD students were among the top finishers in the highly competitive VEX IQ Robotics Competition Kalahari Signature Event in Ohio earlier this week.
Nearly 140 strong teams from the United States and Canada participated in the robotics competition. The HPISD middle and elementary school students were members of two teams from Magikid Highland Park Robotics Lab on Sherry Lane. They are all enrolled in HPISD’s talented and gifted program.
The middle school team (Team Capybara) earned the Teamwork Champion award. With this major national win, the team has pre-qualified for the VEX Robotics World Championship in St. Louis this April.
The members of Team Capybara include University Park Elementary student Connor Moore, McCulloch Intermediate School student Donovan Moore, and Highland Park Middle School student Eric Xiao.
An outstanding performance earned the elementary school team (Team Gladiators) seventh place in Teamwork.
The members of Team Gladiators include University Park Elementary student Arda San, Armstrong Elementary student Lucas Qiu, and McCulloch Intermediate students Victor von Horvath and Isaac Droege.

Prior to the Ohio competition, Team Gladiators and Team Capybara had already qualified for this year’s VEX Robotics State Championship based on their strong performances at local tournaments. Seven of the 10 students on both Magikid Highland Park teams are enrolled in HPISD talented and gifted programs.
