As the regular-season winds down, the District 12-5A boys basketball standings have become a mad scramble for playoff positioning.
Highland Park held sole possession of the district lead prior to Friday, when the Scots fell 78-63 at Frisco Wakeland. Now HP is tied with The Colony and Frisco Reedy for the top spot, with the Wolverines another game back in fourth.
One highlight in Friday’s loss was a 29-point breakthrough for freshman guard Chris Martinez. However, the Scots (16-10, 7-2) couldn’t carry over the momentum from a lopsided 93-45 win over Carrollton Turner on Thursday that marked a season-high offensive output.
In that game, Canon Wyatt scored a game-high 21 points and Charlton Bradford added 16 as HP rolled to a 61-29 halftime advantage. Next up, the Scots will host The Colony on Tuesday in a critical showdown.
In girls action, HP suffered a 54-50 loss to powerhouse Wakeland on Friday and dropped into third place in the 12-5A standings with three games remaining. Ellington Heis scored a remarkable 29 points for the Lady Scots (20-10, 8-3).
The defeat came one day after HP trounced an overmatched Turner squad 67-5 behind a game-high 21 points from Kate Danner and 13 from Cate Young.
