Highland Park High School student Maggie Cordon recently participated in the regional Presidential 1776 Award competition, where she was one of four students to represent Texas.
The Presidential 1776 Award is a nationwide civics competition that challenges students’ knowledge of American history, the Constitution, and how the nation was founded. The competition aims to teach students about the history and foundation that structures America.
The test consists of three rigorous rounds. On Feb. 22, Cordon participated in the first round, known as the Impossible Civics Test, where students were given a timed, multiple-choice test covering an array of historical events. Students who passed the first round qualified for the Regional Semifinals, where finalists from each registered state could compete in person.
On May 2, at the George W. Bush Presidential Center, one of five regional testing locations around America, Cordon answered verbal, short-answer questions on key moments in history.
By advancing to the Regional Semifinals, Cordon earned a spot among Texas’ four state finalists, adding her own footnote to the history books.
