Brilliant Plan Gets Flushed Down The Toilet

|

Sports editor Chuck Cox and I have an agreement: When two Highland Park High School teams have playoff games at the same time, he covers the boys, and I cover the girls.

My wife and I also have an agreement: When my two young sons push her to her wits’ end and she just needs some time to herself, I cover our boys.

Last Friday night, I was trying to uphold my end of both deals. The Highland Park soccer teams had simultaneous sectional matches, at a time when my wife had somewhere she needed to be. So I tried to report on what turned out to be a 1-0 Lady Scots victory with my two little clones in tow. “It’s soccer,” I thought. “It’s not like I’ll have to keep stats. I’ll just have to take note of the goals.” Or, in this case, goal.

Well, you know what they say about the best-laid plans of mice and men. Here’s how my postgame interview with Highland Park senior Katie Martin began: “I’m going to be honest with you. I brought my two sons to the game, and your goal happened while I was taking them to the bathroom. Can you describe it for me?”
