During a brief study session on Sept. 16, the Highland Park Town Council brainstormed the burning issue of park signage.
The existing markers, often bronze plaque-style signs, were assessed, and possible new paths forward, featuring block, stone, wood, and other durable mediums were speculated upon.
“My suggestion is to go with bronze, like the existing ones, to be consistent,” offered Mayor Will C. Beecherl. “They’re actually bigger than you think when you get up to them.”
There are eight official parks listed on the town website’s interactive parks map, though, of course, smaller green spaces exist, such as Dyckman Park, Lockhart Park, and tiny Bartholow Square, perhaps Highland Park’s smallest park.
“It was generous of those developers to allocate 20 percent,” the mayor mused of the long-ago dispensation to green spaces during the town’s planning phase.

In other business on Sept. 16, the council:
- Authorized continued participation in Dallas County’s Household Hazardous Waste Program.
- Approved a contract with Estrada Concrete Company ($871,366 plus $90,000 contingency) for the Beverly Drive Reconstruction project, which includes the roadway between Westside Drive and Dallas North Tollway. Work will begin soon and could finish by early 2026, weather permitting.
- OK’d an interlocal agreement with the county for food establishment inspections and environmental health.
- Established all-way stops at three locations — Lomo Alto Drive at Westway Avenue, Roland Avenue at Edmondson Avenue, and Westway Avenue at LaSalle Avenue.
- Granted ATMOS Energy Corporation a franchise to furnish, transport, and supply natural gas in the town.
- Approved a contract for janitorial services.
- OK’d an asbestos remediation and demolition contract for the former Westside Court Apartments, 5000 Holland Ave, which the town purchased in December 2024.
- Hired Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc. to do landscaping design for the Hackberry Creek Phase I (between Miramar Avenue and Beverly Drive).
