SKULDUGGERY OF THE WEEK: BURGLAR GONE PECAN

Reported at 2:16 p.m. on Jan. 6: A burglar hit the jackpot when they broke into a Chevy pickup in the 4200 block of Oak Lawn Avenue, but only if they were a squirrel. An Avant Garden bag in the car that the thief may have assumed contained valuables was actually filled with pecans.

UNIVERSITY PARK

5 Monday

Reported at 8:51 p.m.: A criminal cruiser took off in a stolen 2007 MINI Cooper on University Boulevard.

7 Wednesday

Reported at 11:39 a.m.: A porch pirate stole packages worth between $750 and $2,500 from a home on Amherst Avenue.

Reported at 5:02 p.m.: A theft at CVS on Preston Road.

9 Friday

Reported at 12:59 p.m.: Someone snatched between $100 and $750 in property from Kuby’s Sausage House in Snider Plaza.

Reported at 8:09 p.m.: A brazen burglar struck a 2023 Chevy Silverado on Preston Road.

Criminal mischief causing between $750 and $2,500 in damage was reported at about 9:13 p.m. on Preston Road.

Reported at 5:23 p.m.: An item taken from a store in Snider Plaza was returned.

HIGHLAND PARK

5 Monday

A 43-year-old man was arrested on a warrant at about 3:14 p.m. in the 4500 block of Edmondson Avenue.

A bicycle bandit stole two REI Co-op adult mountain bikes from an open attached garage in the 4700 block of Bowser Avenue before 5 p.m.

6 Tuesday

Reported at 1:24 p.m. in the 4500 block of Arcady Avenue: A fraudster cashed fake checks for a total of $13,865.68 that were written with the forged signature of a Highland Park resident.

7 Wednesday

A thief in the night stole a backpack, a Dell XPS 13 laptop, and a bifold wallet containing a driver’s license before 7 a.m. from a Rivian R1S that may have been unlocked in the 3400 block of Harvard Avenue.

9 Friday

Reported at 2:12 p.m.: A delinquent driver left a small dent and scratch on a 2019 Mercedes-Benz sedan in Highland Park Village on Dec. 23, but did not leave information.

10 Saturday

A would-be thief smashed a window of a Ford F-250 Lariat parked in the 4300 block of Westway Avenue at about 6 a.m. and rummaged through the truck, but did not take anything.

A burglar broke a window of a Ford F-250 parked in the 4400 block of Westway Avenue before 8:45 a.m. and stole a Smith & Wesson 9mm pistol from the driver’s side door compartment.

Reported at 6:10 p.m.: The owner of a locked 2016 Chevy Tahoe parked in the 4300 block of Westway Avenue reported it missing, and suspected that the truck and 2022 iPad mini inside it had been stolen.
