Park Cities residents didn’t need to head to the mountains to enjoy winter sports on Jan. 26.
As temperatures rose Monday afternoon, neighbors headed outside to build snow forts and take walks in University Park’s winter wonderland.
Jan and Greg Crespi used the poles they take to Sedona, Santa Fe, and New Zealand to help navigate the sidewalks.
“They work well on really sandy beaches, and on rugged mountain paths,” Greg said.
“And on Park Cities ice!” added Jan with a laugh.
In their 36 years in University Park, this is only the third time that the Crespis have needed to use their poles. The couple said that they had noticed another neighbor enjoying some family time around a front yard firepit.

Nearby, 8-year-old Avery Layman used a shovel to carve a snowman in her front yard. She completed her creation with a top hat, scarf, acorn-top eyes, carrot nose, and celery mouth.
Park Cities children will have ample time for outdoor fun this week. Highland Park ISD has closed all campuses and facilities through Tuesday, Jan. 27. The district will continue to monitor the weather and will notify the community if there are further changes.
The city of University Park has suspended sanitation services on Monday, Jan. 26, and Tuesday, Jan. 27. A revised sanitation schedule is available by clicking HERE.
The University Park Public Library will be open from noon to 8 p.m. on Tuesday. City Hall and the Peek Service Center will be open on Tuesday with limited staffing.
The town of Highland Park has also suspended sanitation services through Tuesday, Jan. 27. A revised collection schedule will be available on Tuesday on the Town’s website by clicking the “Inclement Weather” alert banner at the top of the page.
