Northway Christian Church’s board this week approved a plan to close its Day School after six decades and upgrade its campus. Northway plans to begin hosting The Compass School of Texas starting in 2027.

In a letter, Northway Christian board chair Paul Schmidt said that the Day School, which has been in operation since 1960 and serves children from 6 months to 5 years old, will close in May of 2027. Schmidt said in the letter that The Compass School plans to begin the 2027 school year on Northway’s campus at 7202 W. Northwest Highway, next to Boone Elementary.

“The Day School has played an important role in the community, and this decision was not made lightly. The church board is responsible for making decisions in the best interest of the church, and a ministry cannot flourish if it is missionally strong, but financially fragile,” Schmidt wrote.

He said in the letter that hosting The Compass School of Texas “will expand mission reach and provide sustainable revenue” for Northway, while supporting Compass’ “growth as a Pre-K-through 8th-grade school that preserves the community’s warmth and connection to nature.”

Schmidt said the plans come as Northway has been under increased financial strain in the last three years.

“For Day School families, we recognize this will feel sudden,” Schmidt continued. “We are committed to working with the school’s staff members over the coming months to support them through the transition.”

Northway is going through the permitting process for work on the campus.

Some nearby residents have expressed concerns about the potential traffic and noise impacts of the project — concerns the church says it’s seeking to mitigate.

“These changes would be undertaken with great effort to minimize the impacts — traffic, construction, noise — for our members, Day School families, and neighbors,” Schmidt wrote in his letter.
