Digging deep, Highland Park emerged with a 3-1 victory against Frisco Wakeland in District 11-5A volleyball on Friday night.
The Scots played without two of their top players, Sarah Floyd and Allie Hudgins, who are sidelined with injuries.
“We’re making it through,” coach Michael Dearman said after his squad’s 12-25, 25-18, 25-22, 26-24 win, which required sweeping the final three sets. “We have girls that are stepping up. We had great performances from other players.”
The Scots stayed undefeated in the district at 4-0, keeping up with Frisco Reedy. Wakeland fell to 2-2 in the league.
“It wasn’t our best performance, for sure,” Dearman said. “We were up and down. They took it to us the first set. We came back and won the next two sets pretty well. The fourth set, they had a 17-7 lead. The girls, to their credit, came back and fought. In my timeouts, the message was that the only thing you can do to come back in this is go all out, be aggressive as you can – be smart, but hold nothing back.”
The rally happened. After a 24-24 tie, the Scots grabbed the final two points, adding an entry to their mental toughness.

“That was exactly the message afterwards,” Dearman said. “This will be something you can draw upon and remember when you’re in a similar position in the future.”
