With Many New Faces, Who Will Step Up to Lead HP Defense?

Having just one returning starter sounds daunting, but for the aggressive and hard-hitting Highland Park defense, it’s a familiar issue thanks to annual roster turnover fueled by graduation.

Although the lack of experience leaves unanswered questions, several returnees saw action in key reserve roles during last year’s playoff run as part of a tight-knit unit that allowed an average of just 13.9 points in its 14 wins.

“The development system here is unlike any other,” said linebacker Beau Jones. “We had a lot of guys last year who got significant playing time. We’re not worried.”

Jones is back as one of the leading tacklers and playmakers from last season. He will be joined at linebacker in the 3-4 scheme by Davis Sacher, Langedon McMurray, and junior Lee Wagner.

“There’s no question Beau is the leader,” said HP head coach Randy Allen. “He sets the example and the pace of the defense.”

Along the undersized yet athletic defensive line, Thomas Cook is an elite pass rusher opposite Hatcher Phillips at defensive end. Henry Hobbs will line up at nose tackle. Allen said the defense managed to limit the HP rushing game during the spring, which stood out.

“The front seven is still going to be super strong but we’re going to be well-rounded,” Cook said.

The deep but inexperienced secondary features safeties Ronan Moreland and Martin True, plus cornerbacks Jack Sumner and Dean Dulin.

“I’ve been impressed with our defensive players,” Allen said. “I think they’re going to rise to the occasion.”
