SMU Pom senior captain Ashley Pitts could soon be cheering for a much larger audience.

Pitts started the audition process with a one-minute freestyle submission, which led her to be selected to audition at DCC Live! in Dallas earlier this month.

During that event, she performed live on stage, followed by two rounds of the signature DCC kickline.

Pitts was asked there about why she chose SMU and, in her answer, praised the university’s “small school in a big city” vibe.

“I knew that I wanted a small school in a big city, and as soon as I toured SMU, everything just felt right,” she said in a video of the event shared by SMU Cheerleading on social media. “The Pom team and the campus — I loved it so much, and it was automatically my first choice.”

Pitts will go on to compete in the final round of Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders auditions on June 6 at The Star in Frisco.

“With her SMU teammates, coaches and supporters in the crowd, Ashley delivered a standout performance to earn her place in the finals this June,” the university shared in a post on social media about the DCC Live! performance. “As she finishes her time at SMU ahead of graduation in May, we’re celebrating this exciting milestone and all that’s ahead for her.”

Carrie Teller, who serves as the Director of Spirit Groups at SMU overseeing the school’s Cheer, Pom, and the Human Peruna mascot program, was a member of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders from 1992 to 1995, and performed in Super Bowls XXVII and XXVI.
