In the midst of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge frenzy about a month ago, some Alcuin students decided to nominate Walter Sorensen, the head of the school. Instead of accepting and completing the challenge in the usual 24-hour time frame, this group of sixth graders turned the challenge into a school-wide fundraiser.
Ian Espino-Barros, Theo Johnson, and Elliot Ludlow placed buckets around campus and asked their community and peers for donations. Over the last four weeks, they raised $850 from students, parents, faculty, and staff.
On Thursday, Sorensen got a frigid ice bath at a school assembly. He took it in stride, saying he was touched by the leadership and generosity of the students that made an impact on fighting Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
