Triple Double: Scots Send Six to State

Highland Park will double its chances for a state championship during the spring tennis season, after the Scots won a pair of Class 5A Region II titles on Wednesday in Melissa.

Ray Saalfield and Carl Newell will represent HP in boys doubles, while Isabella McElfresh and Eden Rogozinski will be one of two pairings to compete in girls doubles at the state tournament on April 26-27 in College Station.

Saalfield and McElfresh teamed up for a silver medal in mixed doubles a year ago, when the Scots did not claim any spring titles. However, HP continued its dominance in the fall team tennis season in November.

At regionals, Saalfield and Newell survived three-set thrillers in both the semifinals and in the final against a tandem from Frisco Centennial. In that match, they rallied to win, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.

Meanwhile, McElfresh and Rogozinski did not drop a set in any of their four regional matches. The closest test was against HP teammates Gabriella Rosas and Rebecca Borrego in the final, 6-1, 7-6. Rosas and Borrego also earned a trip to state with the runner-up regional finish.
